My students need Storytelling Kits to broaden their horizons and improve their expressive language skills at the same time. These kits are a great way to use language and have fun at the same time.
I'm a speech therapist at a Title I elementary school in NYC. We are trying desperately to pull our school into the 21st century. Right now we only have old books and games from the 1980's. My students don't even know what half the pictures are even supposed to be. The students I work with receive multiple special educational services. Despite the many challenges my students face in school and at home, they genuinely want to learn but they don't always have the language to explain what they are thinking and feeling. They aren't exposed to different social situations on a regular basis and some just shut down because they don't have the language to explain themselves.
My Project
The storytelling kits are an excellent way for my students to expand their language skills. The fact that they can tell the stories themselves will motivate them to use language, answer questions and have conversation with their friends. Inside every child is an actor just waiting to get out! The best way to increase language skills is to read more and these books will help all of my students to learn and moreover, expand their pragmatic skills. They can help each other to answer questions, follow directions, sequence stories and become actors and actresses playing different roles and experience different aspects of reading. They want to learn, they want to expand their knowledge base and this will definitely help them on the road to becoming well rounded speakers. Come on, say that Sh sound, you know you can do it!
