I teach reading to 6-8th graders in a high-needs community. My students are very eager to learn and many of them enjoy reading very much. I try to motivate my students to read independently in the novel of their choice every day, but many of my students are disappointed with the selections I have to offer in my classroom library.
Because of this, I am reaching out in the attempt to revamp my library. I want to fill it with high-interest novel choices so my students can come to me smiling telling me how happy they are with the multitude of high-interest novel choices in my library instead of frowning saying they can't find anything they want to read. Many of them have expressed interest in reading fiction texts about students who face similar issues that they do each day and I just don't have a lot to offer in my classroom library.
I need sets of novels that my students want to read. I want my classroom library to be a place students want to be. I want them to be inspired to read and I want them to feel fulfilled when they walk away from it. Providing my students with titles they want to read will help them find the joy in reading and will help improve their fluency and comprehension skills. This will help put them in a better position when they have to take the standardized reading test because there is proof that independent reading helps raise test scores.
Upgrading my classroom library is a very high-priority item for me. It is a goal I really want to accomplish. Your help will help motivate my students to read, a skill they need to be successful in life.
