I Want to Read and Write

Help me give my students multicultural books to read, plus colored pencils and workbooks to make our own stories.

My Students

Our school is at 50% low income and on third of the population is a second language learners. I teach reading, writing, speaking and listening skills to small groups of kindergarten, first and second graders. I teach these skills using and processing chants, reading books, writing and having fun.

One challenge I have is finding beginning reading books that reflect who my students are.

I want my students to be excited about reading and look forward to see what will happen next.

My Project

My project is to help students get excited about reading books that reflect them and stories they have written. We will read the books we bought as a groups and individually.

The students will use the workbooks to write and illustrate their words.

My goal is to increase their academic vocabulary and when they write they will be using the words they have learned. The students will write using our word walls and words from chants that we recite. This will be evidence to the students of how much they know and hopefully it will challenge them to learn more.
