All children start their school careers with sparkling imaginations, fertile minds, and a willingness to take risks with what they think. Let's give these students a chance to begin the second grade full of success!
My second-grade students are ages 7-9 years-old and like most kids, they love learning through doing.
We are a charter school in the heart of our city in California and the majority of our students are of refugee status or low-income. These students are watching their parents work hard to provide their basic necessities, such as, food, housing, and clothing, in a country that represents freedom and opportunities for them. In my classroom, it is my pleasure to provide a place of safety, security, and a sense of belonging. In return, students can take risks to learn and explore the magnificent world around them.
My Project
My students are very active and kinesthetic learners, as a result they are always moving. Having wobble boards will allow my students an outlet for their energy, without disturbing the students around them. As the students have the ability to wiggle their feet under their desk, they will have greater focus on their activities they are working on.
Pop-Its in the form of a 100's grid, will allow my kinesthetic learners the ability to show addition and subtraction strategies, including multi-digit with regrouping.
These concepts are often a challenge, however for kinesthetic learners, physically pushing numbers or "popping" the amount to add or subtract helps students connect the strategies to real-life learning and life long applications.
