My students need a CD/cassette player and headphones to listen to their favorite stories over and over again and to increase their vocabulary development, comprehension and listening skills.

My Students
My students are the absolute BEST! They are 3 and 4 year old children who are inquisitive, kind, entertaining, resourceful, and enthusiastic learners.
Most of my students are considered "at-risk" because they come from low income households.
"At-risk" children need ongoing instruction and support to succeed academically. ALL of my students actively engage in daily activities that help them develop their oral language, literacy, math, science, physical and social-emotional skills so they can transition successfully into Kindergarten. There are 13 different languages spoken in my classroom. This obviously can cause some issues with peers communicating with others but my students find creative way to communicate as they continue to develop their English language skills.
My Project
My students love listening to stories. Reading to them on a daily basis, they get so caught up in the action and the characters that they rarely realize they are developing and extending their vocabulary skills.
By adding a CD player, headphones and a variety of books to our classroom, I would create a much needed listening center where students would have a choice in what they want to listen to, providing them with more opportunities to hear vocabulary used in context.
As the children are using the listening center, I know their excitement towards recognizing repeated phrases in stories would encourage their participation in "reading", helping to enhance their print awareness, comprehension and emerging literacy skills. As my students are auditory learners, listening to stories on CD plays is their preferred learning style.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
