This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a Title I low income school which integrates students on the autism spectrum with their able bodied peers. Half of our school population have special needs and more than 90% get free lunch. My K-1 students are low functioning with autism which makes focusing on schoolwork hard. They have been raised with iPhones and computers and love to use apps to access their education. The little ones love to use a touchscreen to make learning come alive.
I want to help my students with autism be successful in kindergarten by emphasizing math using an iPad.
My class needs an iPad, a holder, and replacement insurance so that we can have this important tool for years to come. The children use a unique curriculum called Touch Math which allows them to count by touching marks printed right on the numerals. The iPad helps immensely because it can be locked on the math program which prevents them from moving away from the lesson. The program is exciting, colorful, musical, and helps greatly with attention. They will love using their own class iPad!
My Project
The iPad is perfect for the Touch Math curriculum we use at school because it bright, interactive, musical, and attractive to small children. It addresses their unique learning style.
The iPad with its kid-friendly case is a powerful tool for learning the Touch Math curriculum using touch marks placed directly on the numerals.
On the iPad, the kids can drag the touch mark right on to the number and the app gives them verbal feedback as to what to do next.
I can circle areas of the screen to lock specific parts (such as the Back button) which keep the students on the activity assigned.
The iPad's page lock keeps these young students with Autism from negotiating away to other web pages and keeps them on the activity assigned. They will love to work on their own class iPad!
