My Students
How far back can you trace your family tree? Unless you are Native American, you will find your roots in another country. Americans are made up of many different cultural traditions, and it is my hope to explore and honor our diversity through literature and art.
My students are similar to our country: they are a combination of cultures and backgrounds.
More than fifty percent of our students qualify for the assisted lunch program, but what they lack in means they make up for in curiosity and dedication. They are hard-working and caring people.
My Project
The novel, Dragonwings, will allow my students to explore the experiences of Chinese immigrants at the turn of the twentieth century. The students will hone their reading skills as they learn about the time period and the hardships others have faced. The book, Words We Live by: Your Annotated Guide the the Constitution, will help my sixth graders as we study the Constitution and why it is important to all Americans. The poetry of Langston Hughes will round out our studies with a close look at I, Too, Sing America. And finally, the light table will provide an opportunity to respond to the literature through art. These resources, when put together, will make an impact on my students that they will remember for years to come.
I want my students to be proud of their cultural heritages and to be proud of being Americans.
This project will encourage respect for diversity and inspire my students to see themselves as valuable citizens of the USA. You will be touching the lives of my students and future students for years to come. Thank you.
