My students need calculators and art supplies to further their math enrichment with Art in Math. Art in Math will address perimeter, area, symmetry, fractions, and angles.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Olinde's classroom raised $510

My Students
"I Think, Create, and Innovate" My 64 sixth grade students are always ready to embrace this part of our school motto. In addition to 60 minutes of daily traditional math five days a week, my students look forward to 30 minutes of math enrichment daily. Math enrichment comes in the form of STEM, Ag, and/or Art activities.
Our parish currently has four public elementary/middle schools, one high school, one private, and one parochial school.
Upon its institution two years ago, students from these other schools enrolled here therefore my sixth grade classes are like a "melting pot" of students from around our parish.
The math enrichment part of our math experience has really brought the sixth graders together and helps them work together collaboratively.
My Project
By incorporating art into math lessons and activities I hope to have students recognize the relationship between art and math. Another goal is to introduce students to artists and works of art that the students might not be familiar with.
Students will be introduced to artist Lee Gainer, Georgia Gray, and Lea Anderson and their works through a presentation using Google Slides.
They will be given a lesson on symmetry then using materials necessary they will create and color works of symmetry. Students will use markers and construction paper for this activity.
Students will be introduced to artist Louis V. Durham and his stained glass art. The students will be taught how to graph linear equations. They will use linear equations to create a color display that resembles stained glass. Students will use calculators, paint, brushes, and paint paper for this activity.
After being introduced to artist Mondrian and his artistic style students will create their own Mondrian inspired art works. They will use their art to determine area and perimeter of the shapes used. Students will use graph paper, color pencils, and calculators for this activity.
According to research, "using art in math significantly improves retention of key concepts and vocabulary". It helps to have students draw things out instead of simply looking at shapes on a page.
