Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I will be teaching 5th and 6th graders in Math and Science this year, in a Title 1 school in North Philadelphia. Our neighborhood is a high crime and low income area. Every year teachers and staffs continue to struggle to find ways and materials to engage students to become better learners and critical thinkers in their academia. My students come to school eager to learn everyday. They are intelligent and inquisitive learners, and deserve the best education available.
Moving from teaching 2nd and 3rd graders to instructing Math and Science to 5th and 6th graders will pose difficult hurdles for me this year to find creative and meaningful ways to keep my students highly engaged in math and science contents.
With the changing grades and changing content subjects this year, it will be a difficult challenge for me to purchase the necessary school supplies, materials and supplementary items that my students need to succeed in school. With your help and support I am positive that my students will appreciate and be thankful for the rest of the year.
My Project
The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students will help the students broaden their math and science skills. Students will have the opportunity to use a microscope for the first time to see up close and personal with plants and animal cells and how cells look and work. They will have a better understanding of how biology works and be able to discern between living and non-living cells. My students will also learn to use a digital scale to measure various mathematical and scientific objects to exact measurements and specifications.
The Scholastic magazines allow fun and exciting ways and venues for students to learn about life, earth, and physical science concepts and makes and practices math meaningful by applying curriculum connected concepts to engaging, real-world topics.
The current events issue that they read will open up and broaden their understanding of life-changing environments that we live in today.
My 5th and 6th graders will enjoy learning new mathematical skills and strategies using the hands-on learning Visual Learning Guides Math during Guided Math times. The math guides also provide them more opportunities to practice remedial mathematical skills and concepts. My students will further enjoy reading stories about how every day math impact their everyday lives with the classroom set Math library books.
Your donations and support of this project will definitely improve and increase my students' understanding of the world of math and science, but also build integrated, literacy-based competency in their academic success.
