This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I like to refer to my students as "my kids" because that is how I think of them. They are with me from 8:00-2:15, but they stay with me much longer. I often find myself thinking after school or on weekends, "Oh, he would really love that book, or she needs to visit this website on fixing electronics." I want to provide them with the best possible education and I don't want a lack of resources to hinder that possibility for them.
My school is located in South Los Angeles where 100% of the students receive free lunch.
Most of my students speak English as a second language but are now in a mainstream English classroom. They come from a variety of homes and economic backgrounds. I have some parents that are teachers, some that are construction workers, and some that work more than one job to make ends meet. What they all have in common is a desire to give their child the best education possible.
My Project
Upper grade elementary math is challenging to many students, especially with the implementation of the Common Core standards. I think one of my responsibilities as a teacher, is to give my students as many tools as I can to be successful. One tool that is extremely effective in math is the use of graph paper. It allows the students to organize their math problems and numbers and reduce the possibility of calculation errors because of numbers not being lined up, or organized correctly. Upper grade elementary math includes long division, multiple digit multiplication, and the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions. Students have a high degree of miscalculation when solving these problems. The use of graph paper minimizes this problem.
