My Students

I teach in an urban area. All my students receive free lunch. They often lack the basic needs that we take for granted. They come to school hungry and many unprepared to learn. Most parents cannot provide them with the basic tools they need to succeed in school. Many of my students, who are only eight years old, have already attended two or three schools.

My students come to school curious, wanting to learn and explore in a place that is safe and caring.

I do this by creating an environment that fosters their natural love for learning, a place where they can feel secure and cared about.

My Project

The Science of Reading teaches us that phonics is an important component to teach children to read. There are many tools that can make this easier for students

Phonics is the key to teaching children to read!

Mirrors are an important tool to use with beginning readers. They show children how to make the sound you want them to replicate and say, “make your mouth look like mine when you look in the mirror.” Students can make connections by making their mouth look like the photographs on the posters. The posters represent the sounds we use when we read and decode words. And the sentence strips are great for daily review of the sounds the students need to know.
