Help me give my students literature that will reflect who they are and what they are feeling.

My Students

My students come from families with a variety of challenges. There are many different languages spoken in their homes. Many come from low income homes where there is food insecurity and technology is difficult to come by or needs to be shared among many family members. Many of my students have special needs which require additional support during the school year.

Distance learning was challenging both academically and emotionally for my students.

There were technology issues that caused frustration due to lack of reliable internet or resources. Many students did not have adequate support at home because of working parents or language barriers. It was difficult to meet the individual needs of all students through remote learning.

My Project

Distance learning can be so difficult for creating a community of learners and foster discussions. I have chosen books to be used for read alouds and group discussions. The books will touch on diversity and social-emotional needs which will be the focus throughout the school year.

It is important for the students to be exposed to literature that reflects who they are and what they are feeling.

These books will give us the opportunity to have discussions during on-line sessions and begin to talk about our differences and how they relate to what is happening in the world around us. Using a variety of diverse texts will help my students see themselves as having a voice and being represented.

A big part that is missing during distance learning is the building of community and emotional well-being, so I will read or record myself reading the social-emotional texts to give my students examples for building confidence and a feeling of empowerment to express themselves and maintain strong connections to our class despite the distance. These books will be shared with families as well to keep the conversations going at home.
