This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a public school in Elmhurst, Queens that serves a low-income population of over 1700 students. We spend a lot of time reading books throughout the year through read alouds, book clubs, research, and independent reading.

My students are major bookworms who appreciate a good book and will try to race to the library first; they deserve a updated library with books that reflect them!

They are truly amazing and I would love to continue fostering their love of reading by all means.

Many times, we don't even think of being able to go to the library as a privilege. For some of my students, this in fact is a huge privilege. I once heard that education is the greatest equalizer. I want to bring the library to my kids by adding engaging books that they might not be able to have access to elsewhere.

My Project

As our year was cut short by the Coronavirus pandemic, many of my students still houses our books from our special library. As they have all now graduated and are moving on the bigger and better things, I realize that there is slim chance of me ever seeing those books again, and that is okay. Our special library was filled with graphic novels like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Amulet, etc., and I feel in our climate now, it is the right time to be updating it with books that better reflect my students diverse backgrounds.

My students deserve books where the main characters and heroes look like them!

Many of my students don't even know that these books exist. I also realize that many of my students will come back to school this year behind. I'm hoping that having these beautiful new books will continue to inspire them and will foster their love of reading. They deserve to see themselves in the books they read.
