Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is made up of students from a variety of ethnicities, race, cultures, English proficiency levels, and family structures. Our campus has been deemed as Title I campus, which is based on the number of low-income students who are considered at risk. My students will begin their first year in middle school as 6th graders. As you know, adolescence is the transitional phase of growth and development between childhood and adulthood. In this developmental stage in life, my students are constantly growing, identifying who they are, dealing with peer pressure and acceptance.
My Project
Diversity has a direct impact on student performance. Classrooms are becoming more and more diverse. My classroom is made up of students from a variety of cultures, English proficiency levels, races, and socio-economic statuses. As a reading teacher, I found that the traditional selection of books doesn't expose my students to different cultures and social groups. Majority of my students are considered minority, yet the curriculum and books don't reflect who they are. I want to build a classroom library that students can see themselves in the main character. I want the texts to be relatable and focus on contemporary issues.
