it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
A fully funded project will put books featuring Deaf, deaf, and hard of hearing characters into "every" or "all 18" classrooms on campus. Our campus is a traditional school with three special classrooms for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Not only will these books come into the D/HH students' classrooms, but also into the school library and classrooms of their typically hearing peers to increase awareness, sensitivity, and community campus-wide.
We have carefully selected books that represent the spectrum of communication from sign language to spoken language, hearing aids, cochlear implants, and bone-anchored hearing devices.
We have chosen books that focus on understanding hearing loss and the D/deaf experience, and also books with good stories that happen to have a D/deaf character- because Deaf and Hard of Hearing students should know that their hearing status does not necessarily define them. They can achieve all they desire out of life, and belong in every community.
