My students need books that highlight people of different cultures and races. I believe every student should see themselves in a book. We have to make a priority in this area as to promote equality.
As my fourth year at my school is starting, I have gotten to know this school and its heart. I was overwhelmed by the parents and students, and the drive they have to learn and support teachers and faculty. Our school is diverse in many ways. We have many different languages and religions represented. We have an extremely high population of ESE students, who require intensive reading and math intervention.
What I love about my school is that the families here love to learn, and the parents are instilling that in their students.
So each student, no matter where they are in their learning journey, is trying and working to be a better student.
My Project
These books will be used across grade levels to promote equality in the books we read. From the kindergarten classes to the fourth graders, students will have more opportunities to "see" themselves in the books we provide.
Everyone should feel valued and see their race and cultured represented in our classroom books and in our libraries.
The majority of our students are Caucasian however we have a great deal of Indian, Black, Hispanic and Guyanese learners in our school. Many of our classroom libraries are lacking in these areas and we forget that they need to see their reflection in good literature too!
