Help me give my students books (such as The Color of My Words and Kids on Strike) that show a range of multicultural characters who are empowered to face challenges and stand up for their beliefs.
I love my students’ imagination and passion! Their energy for learning is unparalleled, and their enthusiasm is contagious.
My amazing bunch of 28 students comes from different cultural, religious, and ethnic backgrounds that we celebrate every day.
Each student has a unique and valuable set of experiences and abilities that they contribute to the class. We have worked hard to build bonds with each other and consider our class to be like a family, while our classroom is like a home. Students truly feel safe to be themselves, take risks, and explore.
My Project
Have you ever read a book and thought, "Wow! This character is just like me! I can totally understand how he or she feels!" Or was it the exact opposite? Did you search forever to find a character you could identify with and come up empty-handed?
This project is comprised of fiction and non-fiction books that include characters from all different backgrounds and walks of life.
Students who are Hispanic, Asian, Native American, African, African American, Jewish, Muslim, disabled, adopted, and in foster care or just facing challenges will be able to say, "I see me in this story!" They will also be able to reach outside their own life experiences to understand how others feel through reading.
These materials will be used for projects and writing pieces during the different history and heritage months, such as African American History Month and Women’s History Month. They will also help enrich our social studies curriculum as students will be able to learn about topics such as the Civil War, Revolutionary War, and World Wars through the lens of different people at different ages.
