Mrs. Della Salla from Edison NJ is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

I See Me, A Scientist to Be!

Help me give my students materials to encourage them to become scientists! We need a grow lamp, tree and flower guides, a root view system, and books about scientists who work in botany, including astronauts!

My Students

I love my students’ imagination and passion! Their energy for learning is unparalleled, and their enthusiasm is contagious.

My amazing bunch of 28 students come from different cultural, religious, and ethnic backgrounds that we celebrate every day.

Each student has a unique and valuable set of experiences and abilities that they contribute to the class. We have worked hard to build bonds with each other and consider our class to be like a family, while our classroom is like a home. Students truly feel safe to be themselves, take risks, and explore.

My Project

Students will be able to use a root view system to study plants as they grow in soil. They will be able to use a grow lamp to grow plants year round as this is a challenge in New Jersey during fall and winter. When we are able to go outside, students can use leaf and flower guides to identify what they see around them. They can also learn about composting so that we can reduce our carbon footprints in order to help Earth. In addition to learning about Earth, we will be learning about hydroponics on the International Space Station.

This is part of my initiative to get students outside doing hands-on science learning as well as to encourage students, especially girls, to enter STEM careers.

Books also include biographies of important women scientists, such as astronauts Sally Ride and Ellen Ochoa, physicist / chemist Marie Curie, and anthropologist Jane Goodall as well as postcards that will teach students about lesser known female scientists. We hope you'll support us in meeting this important goal!
