Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am an elementary special education teacher of 13 third and fourth graders in a public school in the South Bronx. My students are of African-American and Hispanic descent with 99% of them receiving free school meals. Our school is located in a high poverty, low income neighborhood. The majority of my students live in overcrowded housing projects and some live in temporary housing shelters. Nevertheless, they are excited about learning and they come to school every day with hope, expectation and enthusiasm.
My students work hard every day towards achieving their academic goals despite all obstacles put in their way.
The disabilities of the students in my class include autism, speech & language impaired and learning disabled. I love to match their enthusiasm by providing an exciting and engaging classroom environment. We are a room of 13+1 authors, mathematicians, scientists, poets, teachers and learners!
My Project
As an educator of special needs students, one of my primary goals in mathematics is to help students learn the basic facts efficiently, gain fluency with their use, and retain that fluency over time.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student math fluency, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement in mathematics.
Research shows that using strategies to learn the facts results in a better understanding of math facts and a better attitude towards mathematics than learning math facts through memorization.
Students will use the tools and materials in this kit to develop their overall math abilities through fluency.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
