Your help will ensure that the ELL students as well as other members of our classroom get on track to become fluent first-grade readers. Our school is composed of students from many different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. My first-grade class consists of 23 students. Of the 23, there are 15 English language learners (ELL) who are identified at the lower socioeconomic level.
Due to their limited exposure to English (with many having parents who only speak Chinese), these students’ vocabularies have suffered. The students are not read to at home nor do they own many books written in English. In school, they have difficulty reading independently.
These students would benefit from listening to books on cassette tape or Cd. This would help them develop fluency and expose them to vocabulary that appears in the literature. A listening center with 5 iPods would be beneficial for the ELL students. The devices would allow the students to listen to several books in one sitting without the need to change tapes or Cd's. The students could read a book at their level and own pace. Just by pressing a button, they could reread stories.
In addition, the teacher could record her reading of stories and poems onto the iPods that the students could access when needed. And while the students are at the center, the teacher would be able to help other students improve their reading.
