My students desire to learn and overcome. They are at an inner-city school in a high poverty district and work hard to learn enough to live out their dreams despite their circumstances. Most of my students are not exposed to literature or technology outside the classroom. Please support them.
Our school is in an inner city area and provides a free college preparatory education with AP curriculum to students.
The student population is formed through a public lottery and every student that applies has had the opportunity to attend. It is ranked among the best schools in the nation. Our school does not receive traditional funds for classroom supplies, and many teachers spend their own money to support classroom needs. We are a family of individuals that spend each day striving to reach our goals and to help the world become a better educated and more pleasant place to live. My students are hard working, passionate, and hopeful. They are seeking the opportunity to attend a four-year university and live out their dreams. My students hope to be defined by their work ethic and education instead of their financial circumstances or race.
My Project
My students will use these requested copies of Sophie's World and The little Prince to study how we learn and think. Jostein Gaarder's and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's works have themes and characters that will resonate with my students. They will be able to learn with the main characters. Sophie's World is an amazing book that explains the history of philosophy and the power of knowledge. The Little Prince discusses the value of each person as we all go through times of love, loss, friendship, and loneliness. Students will widen their vocabulary and their understanding of the written word, as well as their reading skills. By the end of the unit, students will have learned to decipher and analyze a complex text and learn to apply what they read to the world around them. They will also evaluate and respond to the complexities of the work, deepening their appreciation of its themes and value. Students will be able to connect with the issues The Little Prince and Sophie face as they deal with their own obstacles in life.
When students learn to read something as prophetic and well written as Sophie's World and The Little Prince, they prove to themselves that they should actively participate in the world.
Students that have a positive attitude towards learning can achieve their goals because they know that hard work, perseverance, and learning they can achieve anything. As students gain confidence in themselves and their ability to learn, we can work through increasingly complex texts and deepen their understanding of the world.
