This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine what it's like to move to the United States and not know English? It isn't uncommon to have students start in the middle of the school year without knowing English. I would like to bridge the gap that exists for these students and learn Spanish to help them transition.
While I've taught in several other schools prior to my experience with NYC public schools, this is my second year teaching in an inner-city school.
Teaching my students has been both exciting and challenging each day. They're eager to learn and I'm eager to teach them. However, the biggest obstacle that remains is the language barrier that exists between us.
My Project
I am requesting the Rosetta Stone to learn Spanish. Most of my students speak both English and Spanish, but their parents only speak Spanish. I am unable to communicate with their families because of this language barrier. I am unable to express to them when their child is doing well and when their child is struggling and needs extra help. Each year I also have new students who come to the United States from Spanish speaking countries to get a quality education.
It's extremely challenging to communicate with these students and teach them what they're supposed to be learning in the 6th and 7th grade. Being able to speak Spanish will open so many doors for myself, my students, and their families.
Donations to this project will improve communication between me, my students and their families.
I want to create a classroom where their culture is valued and where they can still learn the content in Spanish while they're learning English.
