I teach music at a 99% black, rural elementary school. We are a Title I school with 95% of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch.
I'm so excited! I just received three brand new Yamaha keyboards through another grant. Unfortunately, they didn't come with any of the accessories, including the power adapters! We can't play them!
Last Fall I gave a music aptitude test to all my 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. I put the students who scored the highest (sometimes surprising everyone!) in a special keyboard class. Piano lessons are beyond anything these families could afford, so I'm offering to teach small groups for free. I only have three working keyboards presently so I wrote a grant for three more.
I was so excited to receive the grant but it wasn't enough to afford the plug ins - the AC power adapters.
I wish you could witness the three students I've been able to work with. Their behavior has totally turned around. Where they were consistently in trouble before, they are motivated and excited about studying music. Because they are gifted, coming to me is more than just getting out of class for something special. I'm opening doors for them they never knew existed. They waste no time in my lessons and work very hard at practicing their skill.
Your donation for the power adapters could enable me to include twice as many students in my class and give them skills that might begin a life long career. Good piano and keyboard players are in short supply these days. If these students learn this well, they can always have a job somewhere.
