Our current classroom rug is 7 ft wide by 10 ft long. It is much too small to fit all 29 of our students. Students often feel like they do not have enough space and it can make focusing on a lesson more difficult. Students often sit off the side of the rug, but we want everyone to have a space!
Our first grade Integrated Co-Teaching classroom is full of kind, intelligent, motivated boys and girls!
Of these 29 students, 40% of them are Special Education students with Individualized Education Plans (IEP), receiving various services such as Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Counseling, and SETSS.
Our students come from a variety of backgrounds with varying degrees of resources and support at home. My co-teacher and I really enjoy teaching such a varied group of students because we have found that each child has something great to offer our classroom community.
My Project
Receiving a new rug will make everyone feel comfortable and included in all lessons because we will no longer need kids to sit off the rug! The added area of the rug will increase the personal space for each student, putting the focus on the lesson instead of who is crowding another student. Also, because of the clever design of this rug with its 30 colored squares, each student will have a designated square which will eliminate confusion about correct rug spots. In first grade, it can be hard for students to have a sense of body/spatial awareness, so this rug will help students to recognize where they should be in relation to others.
