My Students
A chorus of voices rises filling the classroom with “I did it!”, “I’ve got this!” “I thought it was an “I”, but it was an “e”! Children who were having a difficult time ordering sounds in words were experiencing success using the OSMO program. Armed with an IPad and tiles students are able to manipulate, letters to build words. After witnessing this first hand during a professional learning session, I decided that the students I work with would benefit if they too, had access to this program.
SV STEAM Academy is home to over 950 K-8 students.
Students in grades K-3 represent over 350 members of this population. The ability to read powers our STEAM focus. Our problem solving is not limited to engineering, science, and technology. We strive to help children develop the problem solving skills that will enable them to become strong competent readers. One of the skills needed, is the ability to decode text. The OSMO program offers students a multisensory approach to decoding and building words. Students who are having difficulty as they try to "Break the Reading Code", are students who will greatly benefit from an interactive multisensory approach
My Project
These materials will be used during small group instruction to support struggling readers. Students will work with the materials in teams and individually. My young learners will participate in hands-on learning games in which players use objects in the real world to interact with the digital world shown on their iPad.
Working together will allow students to collaborate, think critically, and to communicate as they strengthen their ability to decode the printed word.
These critical skills will benefit students in other curricular areas as well.
The range of games will allow me to differentiate and meet individual student needs. Students will use this program to practice skills taught during small group instruction.
