I Model, You Comprehend- Building Mentor Text Library Pt. 1
My students need 43 quality mentor texts, from "Abuela" to "Wreck of the Zephyr", to practice the important comprehension strategies of visualizing and inferring.
Have you ever had to share something with another person? Was it was their turn to use it and you just needed it right then? Well that is what it is like for my students when we need a mentor text and have to share with the other library book borrowers at our school each day... so frustrating!!
My students are amazing!
They are enthusiastic! They love learning! They are like sponges who soak up everything you say! Unfortunately, our school can't always provide them with the learning materials they need to effectively soak up all the learning that is out there. I work in a city school in Maine with over 700 students. Over 70% of the school body receives free and reduced lunch services and almost one third of our students are English Language Learners. That is why these texts are so important for our class to gain from your donations- they will provide us with reading experiences we would not otherwise have as well as help us to build our vocabulary and communication skills.
My Project
The books on our list are known for being quality mentor texts when teaching the comprehension skills of visualizing and inferring. Mentor texts are so important because they provide teachers with a model to read and think aloud with for their students. Children can come back to these stories and practice what they did with their teachers and classmates as well as model to one another. Mentor texts provide classrooms with deep and thoughtful literary conversations that students will remember for a long time to come.
Third grade is an important year.
It is the year we stop learning to read and begin reading to learn. Children need quality literature to help them make this very important transition. With famous authors like Eve Bunting, Chris Van Allsburg, and Tomie dePaola on our book list this year, we will successfully make this transition into fourth graders who can visualize and infer with the best of them!
