Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are motivated to become artists and they are located in the cultural vibrancy of downtown Los Angeles. We are an audition-free, public arts high school, and our students enjoy a rigorous art and academic education. My students are mainly low-income with over 70% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, making us a Title I school. They enjoy the local museums, participate in the arts, and thrive in the urban environment.
Our school has a dual mission of excellence in both the arts and academic studies, and our students graduate ready for college and also for further study in the arts.
We have a 99% graduation rate! Each student has as many as 12 art classes during high school, as well as exhibitions, and they participate in national and local art contests. We win more Scholastic Art Awards than any high school in the western United States. These hardworking kids appreciate what they have. You would like them, and you will love their artwork. We have a mission and a mandate to integrate the arts. They are creative, ambitious, and certain to make great use of any art supplies that come their way.
My Project
This project will help young visual artists express themselves in figurative self portraits where they learn how to paint with acrylic paints. Our unit will look at the history of figure painting and take a close look at the self portraiture being made by young artists of all races and identities in the world today. We will be making responses to the visual arts of our time and finding our own voice and vision to share.
Student artists will create original acrylic paintings that celebrate their diversity and their unique vision as artists in our time.
Students will use these paintings to enter the PTSA Reflections Art Contest that has the theme, "I matter because...".
Students will receive these paints, canvases and brushes in a kit that goes home and becomes their own property. Providing materials for my 120 painters during distance learning is a daunting task and we all totally appreciate your support.
