I have a simply wonderful first grade class in a large city. The area is extremely poor and has no businesses to partner up with us. We had a recent budget cut and have a limited number of supplies. The children do not have much and rarely have pencils or erasers. We make a lot of mistakes because we are just learning skills and many of us have motor problem which require an OT teacher.
My students love to write stories and draw illustrations to go with their writing. Our pencils and erasers wear out so quickly we are always in need of more. These children are so poor that they often come to school without socks and warm clothes. They do not have the resources to buy school supplies.
I have bought pencils and erasers for my class since the beginning of the year but am running low again. Erasers seem to be eaten for breakfast and pencils for lunch. I hand I sharpen them with a little sharpener each morning. We had an electric sharpener but it finally died. Some of my students have difficulty holding thin pencils and so we also need the fat beginner's pencils.
You can make a difference to us by simply donating pencils and erasers to our class. Writing is so important to children. It is one of the ways they can communicate how they feel about different topics. Reach out to m=them and show you care by helping us with school supplies.
