Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 5th grade students live in a low income community. My school is a Title I school, in Staten Island, where 100 percent of the students qualify for free lunch. My students face many challenges beyond that of financial issues. Many come from one parent households, live in public housing, come from broken homes and some are in the foster care system. They often come in unprepared and unable to complete homework assignments because of the lack of resources or no help at home. 50 out of my 60 students are reading 2-3 grade levels below 5th grade. However, despite all their hardships, many of them show up, ready and eager to learn and socialize.
In spite of all their hardships, I am inspired by them daily.
They are spirited, entertaining, charming and eager to learn. But, it isn't easy for them as they start the race of life facing serious obstacles. Their circumstances should not preclude their chances for a good education. I want them to have a leveled playing field. I am thrilled to be their teacher and I want to offer them the best of me and anything else that I can provide for them.
My Project
Children learn better in small groups. This table will allow for small group instruction in all subjects, specifically reading. Most of my students are reading below grade level and require small group instruction, this table will provide a comfortable and separate space to do just that. It will allow me to conference and give careful attention to all of my students. I will be able to assist and support my students. Using this table for Small-group reading will enable me to closely observe students' reading behaviors and provide support while they practice reading strategies.
Children will receive individualized and small group instruction at this meeting area.
It will be used to guide them through reading and will help or enrich their instruction.
