My Project
I teach at a Title I school where 85% of students fall into the subgroup of economically disadvantaged. Ninety-five percent of the student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch. My school's data reveals that more than 70% of the student population (3rd-5th grade) scored below proficiency in reading. I want to help to change this data by fostering a love of reading in the lower grades.
It is my desire to create a welcoming and inviting space for my students to develop a life-long love of reading.
In spite of being economically disadvantaged, my students come to school every day eager to learn something new, and I am just as eager to provide all they need to become life-long learners and productive citizens of the 21st century. In order to accommodate this experience, I would like to create a special area in my classroom where my students would want to read independently. My students will be able to either sit on the carpet, on the beanbag, or just relax on the oversized pillow with a great book that was taken from one of the genres labeled on the book bins organized on the bookshelf.
Research suggests that having a reading corner in a classroom plays a big part in shaping the students' reading culture. With this in mind, I want to be that agent of change for my students as they become lovers of reading and writing.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
