Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a second grade inclusion class at PS 42, a public empowerment school in the South Bronx. My students have a wide range of academic, linguistic and emotional needs. Many are more than a year behind their peers in suburban schools. As part of the Teacher's College literacy curriculum, my students will study and produce two types of non-fiction texts — instructive How-To Guides and informative All About books. These units are particularly important because as my students transition from learning-to-read to reading-to-learn, they will encounter more and more non-fiction, instructive and informative, texts. Furthermore, the majority of reading and writing people do in their adult lives is non-fiction. I need vibrant 'Mentor Texts' that will exemplify each unit's writing style while capturing my class' interest. A fantastic Mentor Text serves as another teacher during a writing unit of study. My students will refer to their favorite Mentor Texts for guidance as they write their own How-Tos and All Abouts. For example, a student may refer to a Mentor Text to see how the author used transition words in her instructions, or a student may check a Mentor Text to see an example of a diagram. I am requesting kid-friendly, engaging Mentor Texts for each non-fiction unit of study — nine for "How To" and eight for "All About". Please fund this grant to get my students excited about reading and writing non-fiction!
