This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

First graders are amazing! I am constantly surprised and impressed by my 20 wonderful first graders. I teach an English Language Development class in a low income, high need school in the Mission District of San Francisco. We require an efficient and compact storage solution. Everyday my students have the opportunity to read books at their specific reading level. To help them develop a sense of ownership of their learning and a love for reading, I give each child their own special box filled with "their" books. As they grow into readers and their levels increase, they have such a great time looking through and sorting their special books. This "differentiated instruction" is essential to academic success for this population. This storage unit, although it might seem basic, would allow students to access not only their own book box, but it also has a place for each student to store their journals and other workbooks. As it is now, we only have space for the book boxes across the room from the student desks. This distance can actually discourage reluctant readers from choosing to read during a free time or when they finish other work. Choice and accountability is a tremendous piece of first grade learning. Although simple, with this Reading and Writing Storage Center you can help empower my students and give them greater access to their materials.
