This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The more you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn the more places you'll go" - Dr. Seuss. I want my students to go where ever their imagination will take them. Reading books is their passport to the world!

My students are curious about the world around them, are always asking questions and love to read.

My school is small, approximately 350 students, which is not the norm in California, with an amazing and supportive principal. My students are eager to learn and their brains are sponges that absorb any and all information given to them. Everything is a potential investigation/experiment to them so I strive to provide my students with as many learning and project based opportunities as possible. I want to enhance the school curriculum and students' intrinsic motivation to learn more. We are a Title 1 school, but because of our size, funding levels are not as high as other schools that have larger enrollments. I believe that the future lies in our children, that they have virtually unlimited potential. My job is to enable them to reach it.

My Project

One of the goals in my classroom and our school is to create environments that support the students' desire for lifelong learning. Literacy learning centers in the classroom are an excellent pathway to increase student motivation so that the children will take ownership for their learning. The listening center in my classroom is one of my students favorite places to be during center time. At the learning centers, students will work on enhancing literacy skills, in addition to math and science content. The centers also provide students with investigations and explorations that will lead to future research opportunities. This project will help us to add more titles to our digital literacy library, and provide additional CD players so that more students can visit the space during their independent reading time.

I am requesting more stories on CD to enhance our literacy center, a space that provides another avenue for more focused attention designed specifically for individual and small group instruction.

Our listening center is another resource in my classroom that helps build excitement for reading, that will in turn blossom into a lifelong enjoyment for reading and learning in my students.
