Teaching kindergarten has dramatically changed in my 15 years teaching career. Assessments, grades, state testing, data, academic growth, numbers, so much emphasis on testing. We teach, teach, and teach every minute of our instructional time every single day, while my 5-6 year old students try to keep up with our academic learning. When do they get to be kids?
I like to let my students start each morning with fun and meaningful hands-on materials instead of morning work sheets.
From the time they arrive at school until the bell rings, my students can enjoy socializing with one another while engaging with STEM/Sensory activities. I feel that this is the best way to get them excited to come to school every day and get their mind ready for our rigorous daily curriculum. More and more students enter kindergarten now with ‘technology experiences’ but without much ‘hands-on’ experiences that help them build the fine motor skills they need at school. Playing with these STEM tools will certainly help them in that area, too!
I’d love to add more materials to my classroom collection in order to give more choices to students! The collection of small animals will be added to the STEM bins to make it more fun and creative while they build. I appreciate all the support I can get! Thank you very much for your consideration!
