My Students

"Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important." - Bill Gates

Do you remember the first time you typed on a computer?

How about the first search you made on a search engine? Chances are, you had a teacher that was fluent in this technology to guide you on your way. My students are a hard-working group of 4th graders from a rural town in Pennsylvania. Technology is now a part of their everyday lives, both in and out of school. Unfortunately, within the school setting, resources are limited. Our school district has been very proactive about exposing our students to new technology; however, exposure is where their technology education ends. To meet our new national Common Core goals, students not only need to be exposed to new technology, but they also need to be fluent in it. With the resources that we have available, my students are lacking significantly in their technology education. In order to create successful, 21st century learners, it is essential for more permanent classroom tools to be at their disposal.

My Project

First and foremost, I plan to use the iPad as a professional development resource for myself. Our school has an iPad cart for student use, but the tools are shared by the entire school and are often very limited or unavailable. Also, our technology department strictly controls our downloading capabilities. If I had this permanent tool for my classroom, I would have unlimited resources to further my own knowledge of the device and teaching applications available to my students. Secondly, whole-group instruction is a very large part of our academic curriculum. In having an iPad designated solely for the 4th grade classroom, I would daily have the opportunity to project my iPad lessons onto a larger classroom screen to allow students to play educational games, master math concepts, incorporate important reading strategies, learn deeper facts in Science and Social Studies, and enhance daily learning. The Ipad offers unlimited opportunities to students that textbooks do not.

Technology can be very influential for ensuring success in the modern-day classroom because it is what students are most comfortable relating to.

As educators, it is our job to prepare students to be successful in their future careers. It is already clear that the iPads are changing the climate of the workplace, and introducing this technology at an early age will only make my students more successful in their future endeavors.
