My students are 3 to 4 year olds, some of whom are experiencing school for the very first time! This can be exciting and terrifying all at the same time! They will be learning many academic things this school year but most importantly they must learn what it means to get along with one another as well as understand how to be their best self in school.
These children come from a variety of backgrounds economically and culturally.
It is my goal to build a community, regardless of their differences, through their shared experiences. In my classroom, learning through play is of utmost importance. Through play children learn how to self-regulate and solve problems, their language increases as they interact with one another, they practice listening and speaking skills, and they learn how to adapt and improvise. It is a developmentally appropriate classroom that is safe and welcoming and one in which they can work on becoming their best selves!
My Project
In this big world, it can be hard for a preschooler to understand why we get upset or why we are hurt when someone doesn't want to play with us. And sometimes the children begin preschool and they are so shy they don't know how to make friends!
They need structured play time and focused books that will teach them how to understand what they are feeling and how to get along with others in this world.
In this ever increasing academic world in US education social emotional skills are often pushed back and studies are beginning to come out that demonstrate that these lack of skills are creating grown ups who can't deal with what life throws at them. It's important we go back to teaching emotions and social skills so we can help to create well-rounded adults!
