Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need iPads and cases for technology support and to be able to communicate with others. This will also support the requirements of the new testing for common core.

My students are Pre-K Students with Autism.

I currently have 5 students, which will gradually increase. None are able to effectively communicate basic wants, needs and emotions. Currently we are using picture icons to support their communication needs, but we are often unable to provide all the picture icons they need.

My class of students with Autism are energetic, bright and very eager to learn. They range in age from 3 years to 4 years old. Our school is a Title I site. These little ones are learning so quickly. In less that 1 month the newest of my students have mastered using picture icons, for their daily schedule and basic needs and wants. They have a couple of icons that indicate how they feel, but it is limited to 3 basic emotions and no way to say why they feel that way. The use of technology for students with Autism is key to their success in communication.

My Project

A child with autism typically has severe speech and language disabilities. Undesired behaviors such as screaming, hitting, crying and self injury typically decrease with the use of an effective, immediate, universal means of communication.

The iPads and the software available with apps will provide a universal means of communication.

The communication books they now carry have picture icons often times becoming lost or destroyed. Replacing icons takes a lot of time and resources delaying the ability of the student to tell us what they need or want.

The use of electronic and or picture icons have been effective with developing oral communication skills. The families of my students become ecstatic when their son or daughter are finally able to tell them what they want or how they feel. They no longer have to play 20 questions or see their child tantrum due to their inability to express themselves effectively.
