My Students
As a school-based Occupational Therapist, I have adorable little 5-6-7-8-9 year old superheroes with disabilities (primarily Autism) on my caseload who live and go to school in the South Bronx, an underprivileged, poor, and drug-filled area. Despite the hardships, these kids have quite the entertaining personalities and are very grateful for something as simple as a hug. As an advocate for kids with disabilities, I want to give them as much as I can because they deserve it.
My little friends need a lot of help, resources, and a voice because after all, Autism Speaks.
My Project
My students require weighted and proprioceptive vests to help them self-regulate and attend longer in the classroom setting. The vest helps create a more safe environment for the child, giving a constant hug that my students need.
I bought one beforehand to test with my kids and it has worked wonders.
Rather than running around the classroom, the students have been observed to read books independently at their desk and watch videos while remaining in their chairs. My students will be on a schedule with another peer to utilize this resource across classrooms.
