My Project
Early, easy access to books is an essential component of academic success and brain development. Our classroom library is a place to listen to read-alouds, practice reading independently, share a story with a friend, and work with one's reading groups. Thanks to the amazing DonorsChoose community, we have a growing variety of high-quality books, fun and comfortable seating options, and a plush new carpet. However, our library could still be better. This project is focused on acquiring some of the best, new children's books available. Books are a window to the wider world. These titles are inclusive and tell stories from all walks of life. It is my hope that reading these stories with my students will be a perspective-broadening experience.
These new books will allow for greater student choice in what to read and help strengthen emerging literacy skills.
Personal choice is a huge motivator for young readers. A wide variety of titles caters to more interests and reading levels. By exposing my class to authors and stories from other cultures, I hope to encourage my students to leave class with a more tolerant and open world view.
