My students have special needs (ie. autism; emotionally disturbed) and come to school for a chance to learn and spread their wings. My school is located in the South Bronx, with limited supplies, technology and funding. Many of my students are non-verbal and face a challenge of communicating with other students, teachers, therapists, administrators, as well as with their family and friends at home and in their community. My students are always appreciative of new materials and items provided to them.
My Project
These materials will help my students learn to communicate (expressively and receptively) their needs, wants, and thoughts in and out of the classroom/school. These tools will help students learn how to speak, put words and/or sentences together, converse with others, and better understand language.
By donating to this project, you will be helping these students improve on and expand on their current speech and language skills (expressive, receptive, pragmatic, articulation).
The iPads and educational materials will impact and change learning, communication, and creativity for these students. For example: "Let's Talk! Conversation Starters", will encourage my students to have fun while learning to communicate with others. The iPads will have educational applications (ie. Conversation Starters App; AAC Speech Buddy; Articulation Station) for students to help improve their communication and articulation skills. Since we have limited funding, this is a better use of resources, while still allowing our students to be able to use appropriate and educational tools. The donations will help encourage the students to come out of their shells and be excited to learn and talk with their friends, teachers, and family members throughout the school year.
