This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are a diverse group of boys and girls with amazing personalities that blow us away every day. Our students live in the heart of a bustling urban center. They are primarily African-American and Latino. We are a special needs public school. We have students from all over our city who attend some of our special programs.
All of my students have special needs, many diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Multiple Disabilities.
Their communication skills range from non-verbal to just needing a few pragmatic tweaks. They are learning to communicate in their own ways as they learn not only life skills but academics as well.
My Project
One of my students has a special Augmentative Alternative Communication system. It is a tactual one-touch system with one object on the device at a time. Each object is on a specially programed tag that attaches to the device and says the word out loud. My student has all of the ready-masterpieces that are available. He just needs more!
Special needs students with severe disabilities need access to the academic curriculum too.
We need to create additional tactual tags for my student. Although he has a big vocabulary, they just don't fit some of his academic needs, for example, he needs "calendar," "science," "math," "social studies," and more.
My student will be able to communicate more with those in his classroom if he has access to tags that are more tailored to his day and the class's experiences.
