Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I have a dream...," the famous words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On January 17, 2012, our school promoted "Sock it to Hate and Violence" by having students wear crazy socks to school. We came together as a school community to promote the end of hate and violence caused by bullying and gangs.
Middle school is one of the most difficult times in a student's life, especially in the 6th grade.
My students are transitioning from 1 teacher to now 6 different teachers in one day and most of them do not know how to adjust. They are also part of a 6th grade class of 132 students surrounded by 7th and 8th graders. With more students and teachers, they do not know how to cope and have fallen into a world of being a bully or being bullied.
My school is one of the lowest performing in California, and has a reputation for having a poor school culture to promote high academic achievement. This is the first year our school is making a change to end this negative image. I, along with my students, want to start a movement to end school wide bullying in order to feel safe at school. Students should love to come to school to learn and form genuine friendships. Unfortunately, that is a major obstacle for my students and school.
My Project
The resources I have requested will allow my class as well as our school to change gradually. Once my students are educated about bullying- the causes, actions, and consequences, they will be able to gain confidence to help stand up to end it.
Every day, my advisory class reads for 15 minutes. I have requested a class set of "Bullying in Schools" so that each student has their own copy to follow along and use to discuss in class and learn strategies about how to feel safe at school.
I have also requested 10 copies of "Letters to a Bullied Girl" to give to each female in my class because I, too, was and still am bullied. This book contains messages of healing and hope that I believe my female students need in their lives.
Lastly, I have requested single copies of books, plays, and posters for students who feel highly motivated about this movement. This will allow the movement to be not just a classroom book discussion, but rather an entire school change to create unity.
As a 3rd year teacher in low performing schools, I have been a witness to the harsh reality of bullying in school.
As a victim, I know the feeling of being hurt and feeling alone in that situation. I am very passionate about this project because I feel that if I, the teacher, could open up to my students and show them multiple ways of discussing this reality that the students will be able to share their experiences and unite to end bullying.
