My Students

My students face increasing diversity in our school and community. With the changing cultural population of our school,it is important to address bullying behavior, as well as the issue of diversity. Children form life long attitudes and character habits. We want them to be positive.

My students are in an urban school that has seen increasing financial difficulties.

The number of families that need financial assistance has risen greatly with the tough economy. We have seen our student body become more and more diverse. It is our goal to embrace the opportunity to learn from each other and value the variety of cultures and individual differences. "I have a dream that one day... little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers". This famous quote for Dr. King's "I have a Dream" speech is one that I hope embodies the curriculum that I use with my students. It is a quote that we use in class as we study the legacy of Dr. King. From role playing the Rosa Parks bus ride, to watching video of major events of the civil rights movement, to making a timeline of events; my students start to understand other cultures and the need to respect all people. This project can help make this dream possible.

My Project

I have some materials that I use in one grade level at this point. I have seen the positive impact on students with they learn to value others and at the same time learn to avoid bullying behaviors. Often bullying comes about when we do not value the other person. It is important to learn conflict resolution skills and to learn about preventing bullying. (Bullying in Schools) My goal is to create a diversity awareness program that reaches all students K-5, and combine it with bully prevention so that students will learn to work out their problems peacefully. The lessons learned during the civil rights movement is a great example of how conflicts can be solved peacefully. The books requested will help students learn both topics at all grade levels. The nook will allow us to download even more books for students to read. I hope that we will see students demonstrate peaceful conflict resolution and how to respect all people. This is the dream I have.

It is important that students have a strong sense of their cultural background and have pride in that.

They also need to be able to get along with others, regardless of individual differences. The more we understand others, the more we accept them. We all have a lot to share with others. This helps end bullying behavior and eliminate prejudice. I hope to see Dr. King's vision of the future come to life in my school. It is my belief that these materials will make that dream possible.
