Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a low-income/high-poverty urban school district. Their experiences are limited. They are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom, with challenges including emotional trauma, a high mobility rate, and many other special needs.

Many of them are being raised in single-parent households, and 99% receive free lunch and breakfast.

My students are 70% Hispanic and 30% African-American. I have several ELL students in my class as well as special needs students. The majority of my students are far below the national and state standards in reading and math.

My Project

I am teaching health this year and my 4th through 8th graders are always asking for a pad. Many parents don't talk to their kids about the changes their child will go through, and it creates a lot of questions or the children are too embarrassed to ask a parent.

My students want an adult to answer their questions or to read independently about getting their period.

I plan to make these books available for check out in our school library. I plan to have the sanitary pads available in the library, gym, and main office for the students if they ask for them.
