My Project
This year I am teaching Advanced Placement, Honors, and College Prep Biology. I am also advising the Eco Mindfulness and Garden Clubs. My students care about the environment, gardens, and campus beautification.
My AP biology students need the Osmosis Lab Kit, chambers, and chemicals for their cell transport lab series.
I heard about these osmosis chambers from another teacher and she recommended trying them. I think the chambers can serve as a better model of a cell to study concepts like diffusion and osmosis. Looking forward to revamping this unit. I'm going to have my students also perform their osmosis labs with the dialysis tubing. Afterwards we will compare which methods worked better.
The yeast and sodium alginate will be used to create yeast spheres that then need to be dipped in different dilutions of hydrogen peroxide to study enzyme activity. I haven't done the enzyme lab with yeast spheres but I tried it at a job training and it was a little more complicated initially, but once the students make their own spheres they can use it to study enzymes, gas pressure, and cellular respiration. The little medicine cups will help hold the different spheres in their different concentrations.
My students always need highlighters and colored pencils to label their diagrams and model difficult concepts in their lab notebooks.
