Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in the highest crime ridden neighborhood in New York. However, that's not who my students are! My students are bright eyed middle schoolers who want to learn! They want to get better at reading and writing, and are willing to put in the work!
Although they are sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, on average, my students read, at minimum, two grades below their grade level.
How does this happen? The majority of my students, unfortunately, do not have the financial means to purchase books to read in their homes. Furthermore, they do not have anyone to take them to the library on a consistent basis. Therefore, over the years, they've slowly fallen behind in their reading levels. Despite being behind, they are willing and eager to work hard and get back on their appropriate reading level.
My Project
These books will grab my students attention, and help them continue to fall in love with reading. As more books come in that they can relate to, they are beginning to look forward to reading! I've also included non-fiction books to help grow their knowledge about the world.
My students want more books!
These words are music to my ears! We need books on their various levels from Kindergarten to 7th grade. Our titles include Side Effects May Vary, Behind Rebel Lines: The Incredible Story of Emma Edmonds, Civil War Spy, Real Friends, Long Way Down, The Hate U Give and many more. By having access to a wider variety of books, my students are more inclined to want to read!
The more they read on their level, the better their reading comprehension. As their reading comprehension increases, not only does their English improve, but their mathematics grades improve as well! Thank you for helping my students grow!
