it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is comprised of over 70% low income students comprised of a wide variety of reading comprehension levels. Students frequently cannot afford their own resources but are too embarrassed to let teachers and other support staff know that they cannot acquire the necessary materials to be competitive academically. Students love the new books I provide each year and can't wait to see what I bring back to the class from my trips all year.
My students have demonstrated an exceptional appreciation for the materials I provide personally and through DonorsChoose.org.
We are currently considering Hamlet in our English II classes but the students are struggling with the Shakespearean language and this is in part because they are ELL students. I would like to provide more accessible versions of the texts in my classroom.
My Project
Most students dread reading Shakespeare, even under the best of circumstances. I have, however, noticed a marked improvement in the performance of my struggling students, as well as students who do not face the same challenges, when I am able to provide students with the modern English version of passages from Shakespeare.
I've requested Hamlet and Macbeth from the No Fear Shakespeare series.
My English Language Learners and Special Education students frequently request this version and have commented on how much more they enjoy Shakespeare when I provide the "easier" version alongside the original. Student analysis and writing improve when they are able to understand the text easily and, in fact, this has allowed for more in-depth analysis, as well as understanding the relevance of a text that is 500+ years old.
Please help me make Shakespeare accessible to all!
