Help me give my students a Build Me Emotions set and an Animal Bingo from LEGO which will help to identify emotions, practice teamwork, turn taking and practice coping skills.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a Title I elementary school in a NYC borough. My kindergarten students are eager and ready to learn despite the hardships they face, such as learning disabilities, learning English as a second language, poverty, and coming from an immigrant population. They are full of questions and at times shy, but they love coming to school and learning something new everyday. Many of the parents have a limited education and are unable to provide academic support. That is why a positive and enriching school experience and the proper tools are so important. I want them to have the chances and opportunities that are not offered in many parts of the world, a chance to rise above their circumstances.
My Project
With these materials my students will be able to explore and identify emotions with hands on experience in a fun and engaging way. With the Build Me an Emotion LEGO set, students collaborate to recognize feelings, identify similarities and differences, not only in themselves but in characters during our literacy block. The set also comes with building cards that provide support and inspiration so children can continue to build and rebuild characters again and again.
These activities will help their social emotional growth, help develop their empathy skills, and practice compassion.
The Animal Bingo LEGO game will help my students explore collaborative play, follow game rules, and practice turn taking as they build the colorful animal models from the game cards. They will also practice shape and color recognition, matching, and counting animals, as they learn to follow instructions in a way that engages all their senses. My students need to practice these social skills over and over to help them feel confident and successful. These experiences will also benefit their academic learning. Thank you for supporting this project and helping my students feel good!
