Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Everyone has heard (or possibly used) the excuse that you don't have to read the book since you already watched the movie. Many book reports have been written without ever cracking the spine of the book. Numerous book talks are conducted based on the latest On Demand Movie availability. But, so many books differ greatly from their movie counterparts. There is so much depth to a book that is often hard to portray in the movie. Or, sometimes, the movie and the book are so different that it is hard to tell that they are even related at all! I want my class to start to realize this difference early on. This project is two-fold in its purpose - one, I want to have my students be able to compare and contrast movies, CDs and books to see how they differ and two, I want to convince them that watching the movie is not a suitable alternative to completing their reading assignments when they get older. I work in a low-income, high-risk area. My students are well versed in the latest movies, but not the latest bestsellers. In order to capitalize on this interest, I picked a number of books that have been made into movies. I first got the idea from our Harry Potter study we're completing - the students are very excited to watch the movie and I want them to really see the difference. They love reading the books, and the reward of getting to watch the movie has increased participation and motivation. However, I want them to be able to complete these book studies on their own. I want to get sufficient copies of books that students can read (and listen on CD) to a variety of books and complete a book talk. Then, I want them to have the chance to watch the movie and compare and contrast the action, plot, and descriptions. Each group will have the chance to pick a book that interests them, and having the books available on tape will make the material accessible even to my struggling readers. Your generous donation will help me teach my kids early on that books and movies are not the same thing! You will be providing them with an in-depth research unit where they will have the chance to analyze the differences between these media forms. Your support will help encourage my class to read a variety of literature BEFORE they watch the movie!
