This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"To forget how to dig the Earth and tend the soil is to forget ourselves."--Mohandas K. Gandhi. My students are scientists and naturalists who explore and investigate the world around them with all of their senses, and experiment in the environment. They love our garden space!

I teach 22 inquisitive 3rd grade students at a small public school in California.

My students are eager to learn, and their brains are sponges that absorb any and all information given to them. Everything is a potential investigation/experiment to them so I strive to provide my students with as many learning and project based opportunities as possible to enhance the school curriculum and students' intrinsic motivation to learn more. We are a Title 1 school, but because of our size, our funding levels are not as large as some of the other schools in our area, therefore I am always seeking ways to bring additional funding and resources to the school. We have an amazing, supportive principal who believes in hands-on, inquiry based learning, and how this approach to learning empowers all students.

My Project

This school year my students have planted and nurtured our Literacy Garden, a place where they read, conduct research and relax. They have taken great pride in planting seeds, nurturing them and watching them blossom. The space is an extension of our classroom where science and literacy activities and lessons frequently take place. I and requesting an ample supply of potting soil so that we can expand our current garden space and refresh our raised beds with new soil for a new planting season. In addition, I am also requesting additional seating so that my students can continue to use this space for small group learning interactions. We will create a "butterfly garden" by planting seeds that will attract native butterflies; create a "pizza garden" by planting vegetables and fruits that can be harvested and eaten in class. We will create and nurture a learning space that not only our classroom will use and enjoy, but one that the whole school community can benefit from as well.

By contributing to this project, you'll be helping my students continue their efforts to "Go Green" and beautify our campus.

In addition, you will help us expand and maintain our newly created outdoor classroom space that will not only enhance our campus but will provide students with an area that will promote science, mathematics and literacy. Seeing the joy and excitement in my students faces when their seeds go to fruit is one that will stay with them for years to come!
